Attending a nationally prominent institution not only provides an opportunity to play college basketball at a major level, but also affords a student-athlete an opportunity to take advantage of the wealth of academic opportunities that are available.
Here at Michigan State, every opportunity is provided to student-athletes to maximize their potential outside the field of athletic competition. The Spartan basketball program knows that a college degree is vital to achieving success in whatever field a person chooses.
31 Spartans have received their bachelor's degrees since 2000.
“Getting my degree from Michigan State was a dream come true. I had a lot odds stacked against me, but through hard work and help from a lot of people, I managed to make it through. It means a lot to me because I'm the first one in my family to graduate. There are a lot of college athletes that never got their degree, but it's a priority at Michigan State. Everything I experienced as a Spartan I count as a blessing.”
Marquise Gray, 2009 Graduate
“Attending Michigan State University was one of the best things that has happened to me. Besides all of the accomplishments and experiences that I had on the basketball court, my academic experience has made me well-prepared for ‘life in the real world.’ As I look back on some of the professors that I had, some of the courses that I took, and some of the people that I met, I feel very fortunate to have had those opportunities. A degree from a great institution like Michigan State will always be a valuable asset.”
Chris Hill, Three-time Academic All-American
“The important but simple decision to attend MSU over 28 years ago continues to play a very positive role in my life and the success that I have been blessed to enjoy. The support I received as a student-athlete then is still evident in the commitment of Tom Izzo and his staff. That has always been a priority at MSU.”

“Michigan State has always been a special place in my life. The staff and faculty helped me to realize my potential as a high-profile student-athlete. Life as a collegiate athlete can be a true test of character on and off the court. But the stronger the bonds between student-athletes and staff/faculty, the higher the level of awareness of that student-athlete’s potential. This is an area I believe Michigan State has excelled in years past because the people that are in these positions go above and beyond to prepare each student-athlete in their own uniqueness.”
Shawn Respert, MSU All-American 1995
“You’re here not only to play basketball, but also to get an education. The coaching staff and all the players recognize that. Some of us are going to be able to play basketball at the next level, but we still need our degree to prepare for life after basketball. Basketball is not forever for any of us, but a college degree lasts a lifetime.”
Charlie Bell, 2001 All-American
